Damyan PetrovWhat is MY STORY?

My name is Damyan Petrov. I was born on August 16th 1985 in the small town of Sevlievo, located at the foot of The Balkan mountains in the north-central Bulgaria. Since early childhood I have been keen on painting and have dreamt about becoming a great painter who would leave a deep mark in the world art history.

I was a pupil when I started attending art courses in my home town under the guidance of the artist Vasko Vasilev. Soon I was distinguished from the other children by my special flair for art. My art teachers constantly insisted on continuing my education in that field so I applied and was accepted into The Art School “Academician Dechko Uzunov” in the town of Kazanlak /one of the most reputable schools of that kind not only in Bulgaria but on the Balkan Peninsula, too./ There I got acquainted with different styles in fine art:  painting, graphics, sculpture. I got substantial knowledge in composition and perspective. We worked hard in the sphere of still life, landscape and figural composition. Soon I had the whole needed education and confidence to make the next step in my life.

After finishing high school I applied for The National Art Academy in Sofia and enrolled for the specialty Graphics. That turned to be a key moment in my development as an artist. There I had the unique opportunity to learn from the biggest names in Bulgarian Art. During the 4-year study at the Academy I knew almost all graphic techniques and built up great respect and attention to detail that is typical for this type of art /some people will probably perceive the graphic moments, specific for me, in my paintings/.

After graduation in Sofia I returned to my home town and had a very difficult and confused period in my life. For more than two years I was in a personal, creative and emotional crisis. Confusion, doubt and uncertainty gripped my mind. I didn’t paint in this period but it seemed something harassed me. Now I believe that everything I went through helped me build and improve myself and awake the person I should be. One day accidental circumstances gave me the opportunity to become an art teacher and come back to the world of art. Being a teacher allowed me to “wake up” and decide what I wanted to do. Two years later I realized that it wasn’t my vocation. Deep in myself I felt that my mission was different and I had to do greater things.

I have always loved watching the setting sun. That has ever been a special moment for me. Change of light, warm colours conquering space, feeling of eternity and transience that a sunset arouses in me. I adore nature and I have always got impressed by its beauty and crudity. That was the reason to return to painting and in particular, to landscape. Burning sunsets over rivers and mountains, lonely boats ashore, seeing off last sun rays, revival houses, churches and bridges standing to time. These moments I feel in a special way.

My mission is to help people rediscover their real personality through my art,
to evaluate and live the moment, to feel eternity and the beauty of the moment.

I would like to provoke the viewer to experience my paintings in his own way. To ask himself questions, to think, to feel, to interpret and “complete” the painting for himself in a way he feels it. I like to make people think over my paintings, catch the moment “before” and “after”, feel hope and faith, nostalgia and love. Make them know and rediscover themselves. This is the greatest satisfaction for me.

Each of my paintings is a personal experience. I hope you can feel it.

:) :) :)

 I never work on order!
